West Ham United‘s Edson Álvarez may no longer feature for Mexico again after focusing on unimportant things during the World Cup.
The midfielder returned to West Ham after a poor spell on loan at Fenerbahçe last season. He struggled with form and fitness, which was enough for the Turkish club to dump any permanent deal.
That didn’t stop the 28-year-old from making it to the Mexico squad for the World Cup. El Tri lost 3-2 to England Round of 16 and Harry Kane’s penalty was the difference between the two nations.
The West Ham man gave away the penalty, resulting in anger and criticism from a large section of the national team’s fans.
Struggling at West Ham
Edson Álvarez wasn’t keen on playing in the Championship and had offers to leave the London club in the summer. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were ready to sanction a move.
He played 75 minutes in the Hammers’ EFL Cup win over Port Vale on August 8th. Since then, the manager has left him out of the squad for 10 consecutive matches.
Last month, Sport Witness covered a report from Mexico explaining that West Ham United are punishing him for refusing to leave. If things don’t improve, he would have to find a way out in January.
His situation has also turned out to be worse with the national team. Marca reports the player’s ‘career with El Tri is in danger’.
Difficult for West Ham man to return to NT
Mexico appointed Rafael Márquez as their new manager in July. He left the midfielder out of his list for September-October’s fixtures.
On September 24th, we relayed news that Mexico rejected Edson Álvarez’s request for a film crew to follow him during the World Cup. Although the national team didn’t entertain it, the documentary request didn’t please them.
Journalist Aldo Farías reports this has made it challenging for him to return to Mexico’s squad in the future. Marca have relayed his comments.
“It’s more difficult for Edson to return,” he said.
“The documentary issue isn’t simple; a documentary is for a lasting legacy, leave that to Messi and Cristiano, even [Guillermo] Ochoa.”
“They shouldn’t have included him; he wasn’t focused on what was important. I know for a fact that people from the Federation and the coaching staff really disliked Edson, and I didn’t know it was because of that issue.”
The situation, both at West Ham United and the national team, are getting more worse for the player.
