Mexico turned down West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez request for a film crew to follow him during the World Cup for his documentary.
The West Ham player had arrived at the World Cup after a disappointing loan spell at Fenerbahçe.
He played 1,126 minutes from 27 matches for the Yellow Canaries. His time in Turkey was impacted by multiple injuries, and poor form, and this convinced Fenerbahçe to ditch the clause.
West Ham player on downward spiral
That didn’t stop him from representing his country at the World Cup, where he made four appearances.
El tri blocked the 28-year-old’s efforts to push for cameramen to share insights about him and the national team. That’s according to journalist Andrés Vaca, and he revealed this on TUDN’s podcast, Selecciona2.
His colleague, David Faitelson, shared more details on Edson Álvarez wanting a crew to film him while at the World Cup, and La Afición have relayed their comments.
New Valencia manager Javier Aguirre was in charge of Mexico at the World Cup. Vaca says he rejected the West Ham United player’s request.
“He wanted to bring a film crew into the national team’s training camp during the World Cup,” he said.
“Aguirre himself told him, ‘Hey, you know what, not here, not this far. In here, it’s the national team’s private space’. Edson wanted to push for his cameramen to come in, but they told him no.”
His colleague explained Aguirre’s reason for rejecting Álvarez’s request and talks about his situation.
“Aguirre was careful about those kinds of things because they create tension within a group. Maybe if it weren’t a World Cup, they would have given him the opportunity (…) to record in the dressing room, in the hotel, during the team talk,” Faitelson explained.
“The truth is, I think Edson Álvarez lost his way a bit a while ago.”
Difficult situation at West Ham
In the summer, he returned to the London club, who dropped out of the Premier League.
The Hammers made him available in the market and there was interest from a few clubs. However, Edson Álvarez didn’t leave and is still with the Championship side.
This season, he played 75 minutes in West Ham United’s EFL Cup win over Portsmouth on August 8th. Since then, Nuno Espírito Santo left the Mexican out of the squad for every fixture.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered a report from Mexico explaining that Nuno’s side are punish him for refusing to leave in the summer.
New Mexico manager Rafael Márquez has left him out of the squad for this international break.
The former Ajax man’s situation is unlikely to improve in the coming months and has to wait until January to leave the English club. Taking the recent developments into account, it’s no surprise that David Faitelson said the player has “lost his way”.
