Lucas Perri left Leeds United for Torino in the summer and things haven’t gone exactly to place. He has now been told to improve from a physical and technical standpoint.
It has been clear that the Brazilian has had problems in Italy already. The player was at fault in several games, playing a role in their Coppa Italia defeat against Monza. He was also at fault against Fiorentina and there was an urgency for things to change.
He looked better in the draw against Bologna but the Granata have won just one game in the league. They need to get results on board and Perri has come under the spotlight again, as his weaknesses are being spoken about.
Physical and technical improvement needed
Today’s print edition of Tuttosport adds some details to the Leeds United loanee’s situation, noting how Ignazio Abate is desperate to make his system work. His setup demands high-pressing and players are expected to be good on the ball.
So far, Perri hasn’t shown signs of that and he still feels quite a way off from a physical perspective.
The newspaper suggest Leeds United are to be blamed for that, as he didn’t play regularly in 2026 for them. Torino have noticed that and as a result, Perri is undergoing specific training to improve from a physical and technical perspective. Essentially, he needs to be leaner.
Abate wants him to be better on the ball, so that Torino can implement their system well. Perri has been training extensively for that, especially as he didn’t spend pre-season with any club due to injury.
Our take: Matter of time
Perri has previously shown his qualities at Leeds United and Lyon. At Torino, he has had to adapt quite a bit and has been living in a hotel. That doesn’t help and there is the tactical demand complicating things too.
But it is a matter of time before things take off. The international break will do him a lot of good, as he will train with the club quite a bit. Many Torino players are still with the squad and that will help Abate implement his setup.
Leeds United will be keeping an eye on that. They’d hope things improve, as they will get a capital gain if he leaves permanently.
