Sheffield United‘s Jordan Ayew hasn’t refused a call-up from Ghana but had to leave the squad, after the national team medical staff diagnosed an injury.
The forward had turned down offers from Cyprus’ POEL Nicosia and Apollon Limassol prior to joining Sheffield United.
Ayew had been without a club since Leicester City released him at the end of last season. He didn’t find a club during the summer window and his status as a free agent allowed him to move outside the window.
He’s been in the UK since Aston Villa signed him in 2015. The 35-year-old’s desire was to continue in England, where Blackburn Rovers came forward outside the window. They couldn’t wrap up the operation, allowing Chris Wilder’s side to swoop in.
Kept NT spot after Sheffield United start
Jordan Ayew took a massive pay cut to join the Championship side, who have offered him a one-year contract, worth £500k gross per year.
The Ghana international made his Sheffield United debut when he came off the bench in their 1-0 league defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He then went to make two more substitute appearances for the Blades.
Carlos Queiroz included him in his Black Stars squad for the ongoing international break. The attacker made the trip to join the national team camp, where their doctors put him under further tests.

No clarity on Sheffield United player’s injury
Ghana football association president Kurt Okraku has spoken to Asempa FM and Pulse have relayed his comments.
“Jordan Ayew didn’t turn down the Black Stars call-up. But he has some medical challenges. He flew all the way to Ghana, and you saw him in camp, and our doctor took him to a medical facility for an MRI, which detected his injury,” he said.
The new Sheffield United signing made his Ghana debut in 2010 and has 33 goals and 20 assists from 133 matches. The president heaped praise on his commitment towards the national team.
“Jordan Ayew has served the Black Stars for so many years. He’s extremely dedicated to the Black Stars. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in the morning, afternoon or dawn, if you invite him, he’ll turn up,” Okraku explained.
Okraku didn’t specify the nature of Ayew’s setback or when he will be fit again. Chris Wilder will hope he’s available when the Blades host Lincoln City at Bramall Lane on October 10th.
