Tottenham Hotspur‘s Lucas Bergvall has said the Premier League side have big goals when responding to teammate’s suggestion of a lack of confidence.
Last season, the north London club went through a difficult phase and had three coaches. Roberto De Zerbi, who arrived in March, helped them narrowly avoid relegation as Spurs finished 17th for second season in a row.
Tottenham invested heavily in the summer, spending well over €350m on new signings. However, results haven’t improved this season as they are yet to secure their first league win.
Confident Tottenham’s form will improve
After five matches, the English club are bottom of the table and scored their first league goal in their 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
The Sweden international is with the national team camp and has been speaking to the local media. Fotbollskanalen were curious to find out his views on Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start to this season.
Responding to that, he said: “It’s been a tough start for us, but we’re just looking ahead.”
“Of course it’s tough. At the same time, it’s part of football. It feels like we’re playing better and taking steps every day in training. It’s just looking ahead and keeping going. Then we’ll get some kind of reward.”
In the summer, Andrew Robertson joined Spurs for free, after nine years at Liverpool. He believes Tottenham are scarred after 17th placed finishes in the last two seasons, because of which his new teammates lose confidence whenever they concede a goal.
The 20-year-old midfielder has a different view, and when sharing, he talked about Spurs’ big ambition.
“It’s hard for me to say how we’ve been affected by previous years. But it’s a process. We have a lot of new players and a fairly new coach, who was part of saving us last year,” Bergvall explained.
“We’re trying to build something big and it takes time. But if he (Robertson) has that opinion, he has that opinion, I’m not saying it’s wrong or right.”
Bergvall has faith in Tottenham
Earlier this month, the youngster committed his long-term future to Spurs by signing an extension until 2031. It shows he believes in the Premier League side and their project.
This saw him increase his salary from €2m to €6.04m per year. Lucas Bergvall has refused to confirm whether his new contract includes a release clause.
After signing an extension, Roberto De Zerbi has urged the Swede to take the next step in his development.
On this topic, he added: “It’s difficult to put into words exactly what you need to improve. It’s all from experience, to learn new things every day, and then get better at everything possible.”
“Be more mature in certain parts of the game. Maybe be even tougher in certain parts of the game. Then maybe there are things I don’t want to talk about in the media, what kind of relationship and communication we have between us.”
Bergvall has played 258 minutes from five appearances this season.
