Ruben Amorim has already been facing ups and downs at AC Milan. He has again opened up on how his Manchester United experience has shaped him into being a better manager.
The Rossoneri were under pressure some weeks ago right after they lost to Benfica in the Europa League opener. This came after draws against Juventus and Lazio, as they are still getting to grips with the Portuguese coach’s system.
After the win over Lecce, Amorim admitted he can’t make the same mistakes that he made at Manchester United. This came at a point when he had shifted to a back four for that game, showing tactical adaptability.
As the international break ends, the manager has again talked about his spell at Old Trafford.
Manager grateful about journey
The 41-year-old initially noted similarities between Milan and Sporting.
He said – via MilanNews: “The experience we’ve gained at other clubs helps us in every challenge, or new challenge. Here, it’s more like Portugal.”
“It’s a different kind of pressure, because people outside the club experience the team with such passion. This is similar to Portugal, and I’m used to living like that.”
He then spoke about Manchester United, revealing that the scrutiny he received has helped him.
“In England, it’s a little different, obviously. Manchester United is a global club just like Milan, so every single thing you do matters, and that’s helped me try to perform at my best here with Milan.”
Further, Amorim also appeared grateful for his journey so far as it has shaped him into who he is.
“In my mind, everything I’ve experienced in my career has served to reach this point, at this very special club, to be ready to help it. I know that all the experience I’ve gained in the past will help me in both the good and the bad times with this team.”
Manager showing signs of adapting
Tactically, it does appear as if Amorim has learnt something from Manchester United. His inflexibility cost them games and eventually led to him falling out with players.
At Milan, he has recognised the team needs time to fit into his system. That is why he used a back-four against Lecce.
Moreover, he has also publicly spoken about how he should be less vocal about his ideas. This came after he got into a bit of a verbal battle with a journalist about his team selection.
It was a sign that scrutiny will only grow, if he doesn’t fit to the demands of a huge club. So clearly, Amorim is desperate to make it work and is a bit more flexible now.
