Chelsea and Arsenal could see Tomás Aranda back on the pitch much sooner than expected. The Boca Juniors youngster is making a surprisingly quick recovery from a serious injury.
The Argentine midfielder was supposed to be out until 2027 after fracturing his right fibula. That was the expectation when both Premier League clubs were being linked with him.
Things have changed rather dramatically. Aranda is already training with his teammates again and could even return to Boca’s squad this weekend. A comeback before the end of the year suddenly looks very realistic.
Chelsea and Arsenal target could return this weekend
According to TyC Sports, Aranda has recovered far quicker than anyone expected. The youngster is back in full training. In addition, Boca manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena is considering including him against Defensa y Justicia on Saturday.
The coaching staff reportedly believe he’s in good physical condition. They also believe he has enough match sharpness to be involved.
There’s still some caution, understandably. Arruabarrena doesn’t want to rush him back after such a nasty injury. As a result, Aranda will undergo further assessments during the week. But if everything goes well, though, he could get some minutes at the Bombonera.
His last appearance came against Racing on 24th August, in a 1-1 draw. What initially looked like an injury that would keep him out for the rest of 2026 may now cost him considerably less time.
And Boca could have him available for some important matches. These include their Copa Argentina semi-final and a potential Copa Sudamericana final.
What this changes for Chelsea and Arsenal
For Chelsea and Arsenal, the news is interesting. This is given how Aranda’s injury had complicated the transfer picture.
Arsenal were linked with the attacking midfielder earlier this year, while Chelsea’s interest developed into reports of a move at the beginning of 2027, potentially followed by a loan to Strasbourg.
After recent claims of approaches from both clubs, getting back onto the pitch before January would give the London rivals a chance to assess his condition in competitive matches.
His contract runs until December 2029, and Boca have shown little enthusiasm for selling him.
