Atlético Madrid made a concrete attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero last summer.

Diego Simeone’s side weren’t able to make advances as Spurs stood firm. The Argentina international ended up renewing his contract [until 2029] in August 2025.

Two months ago, Atlético striker Julián Alvarez said he’d welcome his compatriot to join Los Rojiblancos. He also expressed his desire to play with the Tottenham player in the future.

Last week, we covered claims from Argentina that Romero will leave Thomas Frank’s side in the summer and that Atlético are still keen on the centre-back.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also in the picture. D Sports now cover the latest on the two La Liga giants’ interest in the defender.

Barca may not be able to afford the World Cup winner and are considering a swap deal with Tottenham. This is to try and beat Los Blancos, but the Catalan club may not be successful.

According to the report, the Tottenham star is one of the dream signings of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. Despite Barcelona’s interest, the Spanish capital club have a ‘considerable advantage’ in the race to sign the 27-year-old.

D Sports share an update from their journalist, Fernando Czyz, on Real Madrid’s efforts to sign Romero.

Czyz claims Los Blancos have reached a verbal agreement with the defender’s agent to finalise the deal after the next World Cup. Real Madrid have already taken the first step and need to find an agreement with Spurs to conclude the operation.

The report states Romero’s preliminary agreement with Real Madrid is a clear indication of his desire to leave Tottenham.

Whether the Spanish giants can agree terms with Spurs or will see another club beat them for Romero’s signature remains to be seen.
