Curtis Jones is yet to fully make a mark at Inter Milan after his departure from Liverpool. But backing for the midfielder has come from Paolo di Canio.
The Nerazzurri first came after the Englishman during the January transfer window. The deal appeared close but Inter’s failure to get rid of Davide Frattesi ruined everything.
In the summer, they remained keen on the ex-Liverpool man. As time ticked on during the window, they managed to move on from Frattesi and that helped them land Jones on a permanent deal.
Jones is currently injured and hasn’t been available for three games. In his absence, Inter lost 3-1 to AC Milan in the derby at the weekend and it was a disappointing performance too.
Jones seen as difference-maker
In the Sky studios, a debate broke out involving Jones. Paolo Di Canio was at the centre of it, with Giancarlo Marocchi also involved.
Di Canio said that Inter struggle against Milan, regardless of how many strikers they play. Marocchi responded by saying that things could have been different, if Federico Dimarco started.
Di Canio fired back, saying – via Calciomercato: “Why? He also lost the derbies because he didn’t play well. I remember them.”
Marocchi then mocked Di Canio for his previous praise of Jones.
“The one I saw in Italy isn’t your Curtis Jones.”
Di Canio stood firm, noting the Premier League’s quality: “I understand why the Premier League bothers you. It’s three leagues above Serie A.”
It didn’t end there, as Di Canio further spoke about Jones in a separate section of the analysis.
He said – via FCInter1908: “Remember: Curtis Jones will be the starter. He provides counter-attack and also helps out in front of the defence. You’ll see he’ll play; he’s the most advanced.”
Our take: Wait on for return
Jones’ strengths have been clear to see when he has played for Inter. He made a high-profile error against Real Madrid but he has offered more than Frattesi when it comes to carrying the ball.
His weakness have also been witnessed though, as Liverpool saw how he sometimes struggles to release the ball on time. This was the case against Los Blancos some weeks ago.
With more game time, he will adjust to how the game is played in Italy. It is a matter of time before that happens.
