Cristian Romero could be spending his final months at Tottenham Hotspur.
That’s according to TyC Sports, who report the centre-back ‘will leave’ Tottenham in the summer.
Atlético Madrid showed concrete interest in the 27-year-old last summer. Diego Simeone had publicly expressed his desire to bring to the club.
“Do I want Cuti Romero? Of course! He’s a great player,” he said.
However, a move never materialised. In July 2025, AS reported Tottenham rejected Los Rojiblancos’ formal approach for the Argentina international.
A month later, he ended up committing his future to Spurs by signing an extension until 2029. His decision has partly paid off as he’s personally enjoyed a ‘very productive season’ under Thomas Frank. Despite operating as a centre-back, he’s contributed six goals and four assists.
However, the north London club have endured a difficult run, especially in the league, and are now 14th in the table. The World Cup winner has publicly expressed his frustration towards the club this season.
Despite having a key role under Frank and enjoying a good run personally, TyC Sports say Romero ‘will leave’ Tottenham in the next window.
Tottenham player has already received approaches
The South American has already received approaches from La Liga and his next possible destination could be Atlético.
Simeone’s immediate focus will be on the upcoming league fixtures and the Champions League playoff against Club Brugge later this month. His side could focus more on trying to sign Romero towards the end of the season.
Although the 27-year-old wants to leave, TyC Sports state his exit from Tottenham ‘won’t be easy’. This is mainly because of his contract until 2029 and his role in the team.
The report claims Spurs value him at £60m, but Frank’s side could demand much more than that to sanction a sale.
With Romero wanting to leave, this could be the beginning of the new saga at Tottenham.
