Tottenham Hotspur are now close to formalising the arrival of Piero Ausilio. The 54-year-old left Inter Milan in the summer and is ready to go on a London adventure.
For Spurs, it won’t be the first time they have an Italian director of football. Fabio Paratici worked with Tottenham both before, allegedly during, and after his ban.
The ban was related to the Plusvalenza scandal, in which transfer values were inflate in order to meet fiscal rules.
Ausilio and Paratici are seen very differently in Italy right now. The latter moved to Fiorentina in Italy and helped them avoid relegation. He then sacked manager Paolo Vanoli, replaced him with Fabio Grosso, only to then sack Grosso and bring Vanioli back.
Subsequently, his competence has been questioned.
Fiorentina are again hovering above the relegation zone. Paratici is very much getting the blame, and Vanioli – who won his first game back on Friday – is again performing a rescue act.
Paolo Ziliani, writing in his column for Il Fatto Quotidiano today, expresses that it would have been better for La Viola had Paratici’s ban been much worse and he wasn’t able to return to football.
How Piero Ausilio is seen in Italy
Piero Ausilio has a very different perception. He is widely seen as the architect of Inter Milan’s success in recent years. During his time with the club they won three Serie A titles, ihree Coppa Italias, multiple super cups and got to the Champions League final.
In the summer it was agreed between Inter and Ausilio that they’d go their separate ways. That’s what has given Tottenham Hotspur the opportunity to hire him.

At the beginning of this month, we covered Tottenham Hotspur making an approach for Piero Ausilio. Earlier on Monday, that situation was pushed forward with a deal close.
Corriere della Sera edged that further, with a headline stating: ‘Ausilio, after Inter, restarts at Tottenham: he will work with De Zerbi and Tonali’
Originally, Ausilio was going to take a break. However, Spurs have proved too tempting to ignore. Negotiations have been ongoing and those have progressed to the point an agreement is now close.
That leaves Tottenham to sort out their paperwork and make an announcement. Don’t be surprised if they don’t rush to do that quickly.
