Tottenham’s alleged interest in Mauro Icardi is getting another push in Italy, despite the unusual circumstances surrounding a potential deal.
Spurs have a full Premier League squad. That means they couldn’t register the free agent for the competition until January.
Icardi has been without a club since leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season. Tottenham were linked with him earlier this week, and that story isn’t going away.
Now a second Italian source has put Spurs firmly in the picture.
Tottenham’s unusual Icardi situation
The 33-year-old striker is waiting for an ambitious project after rejecting several approaches. Spurs are said to fit what he wants from what could be the final move of his career.
There’s an obvious problem though. Unlike Everton, Tottenham couldn’t register Icardi in their Premier League squad immediately. Any agreement now would therefore involve him waiting until January for league football.
There is still some logic looking further ahead. Richarlison is completely out of the plans and could leave in January. With Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush struggling to get goals, it would be interesting to have an experienced striker in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.
Just… doesn’t have to be him specifically.
“Tottenham are in”
Now Giulio Cardone has added his information to the story. Speaking to Radiosei, relayed by Lazio News 24, the Italian journalist discussed Icardi while looking at Lazio’s options in the free-agent market.
“On Icardi, Tottenham are also there at the moment, while Lazio have already made their assessments and reached a decision,” he said.
“If Pinamonti and Noslin don’t manage to provide the expected answers, then new scenarios could open up.”
“The long break can represent an opportunity for free agents, but also for those clubs looking for opportunities on the market.”
Cardone doesn’t provide details of talks between Tottenham and Icardi. There’s no mention of an offer or agreement either.
Still, this is now the second claim from Italy in quick succession putting Spurs in the picture.
That’s worth noting given how strange the proposed deal would be. Tottenham know they couldn’t immediately register Icardi in the Premier League, yet their name continues to be attached to him.
For now, there is some distance between Tottenham “being there” and actually signing the Argentine.
Yet the insistence suggests the possibility isn’t being dismissed because of those registration conditions.
