When it comes to injury mysteries, Adam Aznou is currently providing a real head scratcher while on loan at Malaga from Everton.
In fact, his whole time at the Spanish club so far has raised some interesting questions. First off, everything seemed to be going fine.
Everyone was excited about his arrival from Everton. There was talk of him being a coup for the Spanish club and, the initial signs from the training ground were very positive.
Highs to lows
Sport Witness reported how he’s been likened to Lamine Yamal and even wowed his teammates in training. Yet, despite all that, he’s still to play a single minute for the Spanish side so far.
That was initially a bit of a mystery, before a report this week explained that Aznou and a fellow teammate were suffering from gastroenteritis.
Malaga Hoy explained that the Everton man had been struck down with the stomach bug and was therefore missing the trip to Celta Vigo.
That was five days ago, with the usual runtime for that sort of thing around 1-2 days. It can last for 5-7 days, though, so we’ll give him leeway. It would have made sense if the same issue was keeping him out this weekend.
What’s happening now

Except, now the story has changed. Málaga coach Juanfran Funes spoke to the media at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Villarreal today and confirmed Aznou was still missing.
Except now, according to the Malaga coach, he’s suffering from an ‘adductor muscle strain in his left leg’. He will subsequently miss the Villarreal game.
Now, that’s a significantly more serious injury. Such problems can last one to 12+ weeks depending on the grade. Even a mild one is one to three weeks at least.
But the real question is how the Everton loanee has picked it up. If he was suffering from gastroenteritis a few days ago, he presumably wasn’t training, so the injury can’t have happened there.
Has he pulled a muscle while ill? That would certainly go down in the history books as one of the more bizarre Everton injuries down the years. Not quite Richard Wright falling out a loft levels, but up there.
