Brighton and Hove Albion could be set for their latest raid on South American talent, with Mauro Coronel very much in their sights.

La Tribuna report on the 18-year-old today, after Nacional president Enrique Sánchez confirmed that there were bids in for the defender.

The outlet reports that Europe has set its sights on the centre-back and he is now the subject of a serious inquiry from an unnamed European club. It’s a bid that could turn into a formal offer down the line.

European attention

They explain that Coronel’s outstanding performances, following his breakthrough into the First Division and his emergence as a ‘key young prospect’ for his nation has sparked interest from abroad.

He’s very much on an upward trajectory and bids are already coming in. This was confirmed by Enrique Sánchez, president of La Academia.

He revealed that there have already been contacts regarding the player, although there’s been no official offers yet. Instead, it is individuals linked to clubs making overtures.

“There are unofficial offers for Mauro Coronel; I received calls from Europe, from very serious people,” the club president noted.

Brighton watching

Brighton

Among those watching his development are Brighton. They, of course, are home to Paraguay star Diego Gómez, ‘raising expectations about a potential move’.

There is no indication that they are one of the clubs making bids. But the youngster is one that appears to be on their radar, like most talent in South America.

Nacional, for their past, know they possess a player with ‘immense potential’. The belief is that increase playing time and experience will only open the door further to a move to Europe.

The obvious route could be Brighton signing the defender now and leaving him where he is to continue to develop. That’s a route they’ve taken before with various signings, often to great success.
