Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund says Manchester United‘s JJ Gabriel is a “very talented” player.

The 15-year-old is one of the brightest prospects to come through the Premier League side’s academy.

He has already starred for Manchester United 18s, scoring 29 goals and contributing four assists from 32 matches.

The attacking midfielder made his Manchester United U21 debut this season, managing two goals and two assists from two appearances.

Earlier this week, multiple reports from the UK stated the teenager has asked to leave the Red Devils. Since then, there’s been claims of several top European clubs wanting to sign him, including Bayern Munich.

Bild states the Bundesliga winners can be an option for the England U17 international if he were to move to Germany. Vincent Kompany’s side have been in close contact with his camp since February.

Bayern Munich director Max Eberl’s assistant Bastian Wernscheid has maintained contact. There has also been a meeting between the two parties.

On Thursday, Bild caught up with the Bavarian club’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, for an update on JJ Gabriel.

“I don’t talk about players who are under contract with other clubs. We know the player because he is very, very talented, an exceptional talent,” he said.

When further quizzed whether there’s been any contact, Freund explained: “Not at the moment.”

This makes sense because Bild states Bayern Munich recently cooled their interest.

Signing Manchester United teenager not easy

A deal remains complicated for the German champions. The Old Trafford club, for now, are not willing to let JJ Gabriel leave.

Even if he were to force a way out, there will be several clubs battling for his signature and Bayern Munich have to overcome competition, mainly from Real Madrid.

Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered a report from Spain explaining Los Blancos’ plans to sign him.

Gabriel was born in England and is a non-EU citizen. Therefore, he can’t move to Bayern Munich until he turns 18 years of age.

His father is Irish and his mother has Cypriot roots. This makes him eligible to obtain an EU passport. Should the teenager get one, it allows Bayern Munich or another top non-British European club to sign him.
