Edson Álvarez ‘extends his agony’ at West Ham United and could leave the Championship side as early as January.

The Mexico international joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and was a regular in his first two seasons, playing 72 matches.

Last summer, the Hammers sent him on loan to Fenerbahçe, where he struggled with poor form and fitness. The midfielder only played 1,126 minutes from 18 matches and it wasn’t enough for them to make his stay permanent.

The 28-year-old had to return to West Ham, who dropped out of the Premier League. He was reportedly not keen on playing in the Championship and had options to leave in the summer window.

Struggles continue at West Ham

On August 8th, Nuno Espírito Santo started him in the EFL Cup win over Port Vale. That has been his only appearance of this season.

The manager has left him out of the squad for 11 matches in a row. On September 17th, Sport Witness covered a report from Mexico indicating that the Hammers are punishing him for refusing to leave.

Edson Álvarez didn’t make it to the national team squad for the last international break. He stayed back in London and featured in their closed-door friendly against Wycombe Wanderers last week.

There was excitement in Mexico, with suggestions of Nuno considering him for the clash against Queens Park Rangers. However, the manager left him out of the squad again in their 1-1 draw against QPR on Friday.

Reaction to West Ham manager’s decision

AS in Mexico have a report on the former Ajax man and their title says: ‘Edson Álvarez extends his agony at West Ham’.

Within the report, they discuss Nuno Espírito Santo’s decision to leave him out again. The player overcame injury problems and made himself available for selection after training and featuring in a friendly.

However, the manager again overlooked him, and this hasn’t pleased him or the Mexican media. This could lead to his transfer in January and AS indicates Álvarez is now ‘forced to look for a new club’.

The midfielder needs this to regain his form, and return to the national team. If new El Tri manager Rafael Márquez excludes him from the squad in November, it will be a further career blow.
