During Andrea Radrizzani’s spell as Leeds United‘s owner, the club faced their fair share of ups and downs. The Italian has now opened up about his regrets with the Whites.

The Elland Road club earned promotion during Radrizzani’s tenure but soon after faced relegation to the Championship. The bright times in the Premier League came under Marcelo Bielsa, as they finished ninth in the 2020/21 campaign.

Under the Argentine, a unique footballing identity also set Leeds United apart. The project ran its course by the next season but it saw many players develop into recognised stars.

Radrizzani left the club in 2023 and has revealed how he tried to change their fortunes.

Unai Emery failure talked up

The Italian spoke to Calcio E Finanza about several chapters of his career so far. Naturally, Leeds United was a major part of it and he believes he achieved several positive results in Yorkshire.

“I had five and a half wonderful years, with incredible results. I took the club from a turnover of £30m to around £55m in the Championship and £190m in the Premier League.

“That year, we had revenues similar to AC Milan’s. I transformed the club, modernised the infrastructure, put it back on the world map by doing an extraordinary transformation, and then I made a mistake in the last six months.”

Opening up about his mistakes Radrizzani revealed details behind how Leeds United went down and why he agreed to sell mid-season.

He said: “I agreed to sell, but I made the mistake I’ve always advised others not to make – selling mid-season. The process dragged on, and rumours of a transfer began to spread, even internally.”

“However, the team wasn’t doing well, and while previously, if I’d decided to change coaches, everyone would have followed me. In that situation, the partner, who was about to buy, trusted the management.”

Radrizzani disclosed how he felt Unai Emery could’ve been perfect for the scenario. But a move never worked out because of a possible sale.

“This led to a disastrous situation for the club, because we sank to the depths of the league table and I no longer found the strong and experienced coaches I wanted, like Unai Emery or Julen Lopetegui, ideal solutions to emerge from this situation.”

“Furthermore, I found myself in a difficult situation, detached from the club, in Italy, and with the management team taking the new buyer’s position.”

Emery could’ve been a great appointment

Leeds United were flirting with relegation at that point and Emery had a very impressive CV even then. Besides, the Spaniard has an impressive track record of working at historic clubs that need an extra push to make a jump. That is what he has done with Aston Villa and with Sevilla and Valencia in Spain.

The Whites are a similar club, in terms of stature. He could’ve given them a new-found identity when they were losing one after Bielsa’s exit.
