Rangers were in the hunt for Sakhoun Diawara earlier this summer but lost out to AC Milan. The player has now opened up about the saga.
Sport Witness closely covered the talent’s situation, as the player was offered an attractive project by Rangers.
At one point, they led the race. Soon, Milan stepped in and sealed the move, even though Rangers were offering him regular first-team football.
The talent has now insisted he has no regrets about his choice.
Surprise over AC Milan deal
The 20-year-old had his first press conference as a Rossoneri player, having been on the bench in their 2-1 win over Torino at the weekend.
He was directly asked about interest from Rangers and about his choice of joining the San Siro club.
He said – via PianetaMilan: “The call from Glasgow Rangers? Yes, I’ve been highly sought after in this transfer market. I was very satisfied and surprised when I heard about Milan.”
Diawara revealed it didn’t take long for him to agree to the transfer.
“I’m very happy and it took me very little to say yes.”
The 20-year-old also spoke about his playing style and revealed admiration for Alessandro Nesta.
“Before coming to Milan, when I heard they wanted to sign me, I was satisfied. I was young, but I’ve always liked Nesta. I took his number, and Maldini too. How would I describe myself? I’m aggressive, comfortable with the ball, and I know how to make key passes. I also really enjoy aerial duels.”
Diawara could be a squad player
Considering his spot on the bench at the weekend, Diawara could soon make his debut for Milan. And soon enough, his decision to join the club may pay off.
Ruben Amorim is a big fan of wide centre-backs who can play in a back three. Diawara fits the mould and as Milan are playing in the Europa League, he could also play in that competition.
Moreover, the Portuguese manager handed regular minutes to Ayden Heaven at Manchester United. Diawara is similar to the Englishman. Even if he could’ve played more regularly at Rangers, there is every chance things take off quickly at Milan.
