Wolves defender Santiago Bueno’s move to Club América now has a little more context, with information from Uruguay explaining what could happen next.
Sport Witness exclusively revealed that Bueno is closing in on a loan move to Mexico. He will travel for his medical and the final formalities, with América having an option to buy.
Now, shortly after our information, Uruguay’s El País has brought more details on the thinking behind the move.
Wolves promotion could bring Bueno back
The newspaper’s sports section, Ovación, has spoken to sources close to Bueno. They say that if Wolves secure promotion back to the Premier League this season, the defender will return to Molineux.
That’s an interesting detail given the structure of his move to América. Our sources told us the Mexican club will have a $10m option, which works out at around €8.6m (£7.4m). We couldn’t confirm whether there were conditions which could make that permanent.
The information from Uruguay suggests Bueno is certainly keeping the door open to Wolves. He had to reconsider his future after their relegation and ultimately decided on a temporary move away.
For now, at least, that doesn’t appear to mean he’s drawing a line under his time in England.
Premier League interest never became offers
El País also provides a little more information on the interest Bueno received from elsewhere in England.
Sport Witness previously revealed that Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Brentford and West Ham United had all made contact over the defender.
The Uruguayan newspaper specifically mentions Brentford and West Ham, saying both were interested, but neither made a formal offer.
Either way, Mexico is now his next stop, but the latest information makes the longer-term picture more interesting.
If Wolves get themselves straight back into the Premier League, Bueno could be heading straight back to Molineux with them.
