Newcastle United are still watching Luis Suárez closely after one of the stranger transfer stories of the summer appears to have collapsed before it properly began.
The Sporting striker found himself at the centre of major headlines last week when Turkish businessman Hakan Safi claimed he had already reached an agreement to sign the Colombian for Fenerbahçe.
The story quickly gained traction in Portugal, especially after Sporting president Frederico Varandas publicly insisted any interested club would need to pay the striker’s €80m (£69m) release clause.
Now, according to Record, that particular transfer route is effectively dead.
Safi suffered a heavy defeat in Fenerbahçe’s presidential election, receiving 9,927 votes against Aziz Yildirim’s 17,245. As a result, the proposed project that included Suárez and several other high-profile signings has disappeared from the agenda in Istanbul.
For Newcastle, however, the situation remains very much alive.

The Premier League side are still expected to strengthen their attacking options this summer and Suárez remains a player under consideration after an outstanding campaign in Portugal.
The Colombian has scored 36 goals and provided seven assists in 51 matches this season. At 28, he is enjoying arguably the best year of his career and has become one of Sporting’s most important players.

Luis Suárez may now be heading towards the biggest shop window of his career.
The striker is expected to lead Colombia’s attack at the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Portugal in Group K.
Record suggest the tournament represents a huge opportunity for him to attract attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and potentially secure the most significant move of his career. Sporting are aware of that risk.
The Lisbon club are reportedly unwilling to negotiate at this early stage of the market, particularly because several other important players could leave this summer. That gives Suárez additional importance ahead of the 2026-27 season.
There is also confidence inside Sporting that, despite last week’s transfer drama, the Colombian remains fully committed if he stays. Varandas recently underlined that belief when discussing the striker’s future.
“Next year he’ll score 40 goals,” the Sporting president said.
