Newcastle United’s efforts to sign Sporting Club de Portugal star Luis Suárez could be frustrated by his €80m release clause.
Correio da Manhã Weekend report that Sporting president Frederico Varandas will only consider selling the 28-year-old via his release clause this summer.
Newcastle still asking
Sport Witness covered a report yesterday that stated Newcastle are still asking about Luis Suárez ahead of the summer transfer window.
Correio da Manhã Weekend now report that Sporting are insisting that it will take €80m before they consider selling the Colombian. They are aware that Newcastle ‘lead the list’ and have inquired about him.
The Portuguese side see the striker as a ‘non-negotiable’ this season. Varandas believes the striker can increase his value even more at the World Cup.
The striker, who was a replacement for Viktor Gyokeres, has scored 35 goals and provided seven assists in 50 games this season. He is the Portuguese league’s top goalscorer with 26 goals, and six assists as well.
It’s very much been a huge season for the striker, who was signed for €22.95m in the summer. Transfermarkt value him at €28m at this moment in time, the highest his value has ever been.
Sporting want €80m
But Sporting want over 2.5x times that amount if they are to let him go. The fact he is tied to a contract until 2030 helps that standpoint considerably too.
Whether Newcastle are willing to spend such a sum, on a 28-year-old, remains to be seen. It seems unlikely given their financial limitations. There’s also the fact that they spent huge sums on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa last summer.
The former has already been linked with an exit this year. He is reportedly unhappy with his situation at St James Park. Should he go, and Newcastle recover funds, perhaps that would open the door for a big money move for Suárez.
