Everton have not given up on Daniel Muñoz and remain in talks over a move for the Crystal Palace player. Meanwhile Tottenham are watching the developments closely, but with a different plan in mind.
That is according to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, who provided an update on the 30-year-old’s situation.
Earlier this month, Sierra reported Palace were open to selling Muñoz for around €29m (£25m). Everton, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest had all made enquiries.
The Everton interest has now developed further. Talks are continuing and Sierra believes there could still be a route to a deal before the window closes.
Everton haven’t walked away
There is no agreement at this stage. The important point is that the Toffees remain at the table and are trying to find a way forward. Sierra’s lastest update surely makes Everton the most active of the clubs previously mentioned.
Muñoz would provide David Moyes with an experienced option on the right, where Jake O’Brien and Nathan Patterson can currently operate. The Colombian also offers something different because of how aggressively he attacks from that side.
Palace being prepared to negotiate gives Everton an opportunity. The question is whether the clubs can find terms that work before the deadline.
Tottenham see Muñoz further forward
Tottenham are also still interested, although Sierra says they are not currently as active as Everton. There is, however, an interesting detail about how Spurs view Muñoz.
According to the journalist, Tottenham have considered using him as a winger instead of adding him as another right-back.
That would be an intriguing twist on their interest. Muñoz is naturally a right-back, but he already spends plenty of time high up the pitch. His attacking qualities have been a significant part of his game at Palace.
It appears Roberto De Zerbi could take that a step further. Rather than primarily viewing Muñoz as competition for Pedro Porro, the Italian have an idea of fitting him into their attacking options.
That also helps explain why Spurs remain interested despite their need for depth behind Porro. They may see the Palace man as capable of filling a very different role.
Everton are the club pushing harder for now, and their talks continue. Tottenham remain in the background with what appears to be a rather specific plan for the Colombian.
