Aston Villa are already looking towards 2028 as they explore a possible move for Luis Fragozo, one of Ecuadorian football’s most exciting young talents.

The Emelec attacker is just 16, so any move to England would have to wait. That hasn’t stopped Villa from making enquiries about a potential deal.

There’s plenty of competition, too. Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with Fragozo, while clubs from Europe and MLS have been keeping an eye on him.

And Emelec could have a big decision to make over the coming months.

Aston Villa looking two years ahead

The news in Ecuador is that Aston Villa have asked about the conditions needed to sign Fragozo, according to local outlet El Futbolero.

The idea would be to bring him to England in 2028, once he turns 18. International transfer rules mean Villa couldn’t simply bring him over now.

They explain that Emelec have already turned down approaches for their youngster, although there’s no indication Villa were behind those offers.

Transfermarkt currently values Fragozo at €3m (£2.6m), although that figure isn’t an official asking price. And for now, there’s no confirmation of a formal bid from Villa.

Why Fragozo is attracting so much attention

The youngster has already managed a couple of things most footballers can only dream of at his age.

Born in Colombia, Fragozo made his Ecuadorian top-flight debut for Emelec in 2025, aged just 14. That made him the youngest player ever to appear in the country’s first division. Weeks later he has also become Emelec’s youngest-ever goalscorer.

The teenager is an attacker who likes taking defenders on. His acceleration, dribbling and ability to make quick decisions around the penalty area have helped him stand out.

And he’s doing all this while still being several years younger than many of the players around him. That explains why clubs are already thinking about his future.

Emelec have reasons to consider a sale

There’s another interesting part to this story. Emelec could really use the money from a big transfer.

Reports in Ecuador suggest Fragozo has attracted enquiries from both European and MLS clubs in recent months. His departure in an upcoming transfer window could provide some welcome financial relief.

That gives Aston Villa something to think about. Emelec may be willing to negotiate a deal before the teenager turns 18, with his actual move to England happening later. Any such arrangement would need to comply with FIFA’s rules.

Borussia Dortmund’s reported interest could complicate matters, especially if more clubs decide to get involved.

Villa already have made their initial enquiries, according to the Ecuadorian reports. Now of course there’s still a long way to go before Fragozo can play in England. But if Villa really want him, waiting until 2028 to start negotiating might leave them with plenty more competition.
