Chelsea‘s Filip Jørgensen is happy to have joined RC Strasbourg on loan in the summer window and is getting regular minutes in France.
In July 2024, the Blues signed the goalkeeper from Villarreal in 2024, where he was the No. 1 at the La Liga side during the 2023/24 season. At Stamford Bridge, he settled for a backup role as Robert Sánchez was ahead of him.
In his debut season at Chelsea, the Denmark international had to settle for minutes in the UEFA Conference League and cup competitions.
Jørgensen kept 10 clean sheets and conceded 24 goals from 22 matches. Last season, he had one clean sheet and let in 17 goals from 12 matches.
Chelsea exit planned in advance
In August, the stopper joined RC Strasbourg on a season-long loan move and has started five matches so far this season. This helped him become Denmark’s new No.1 during this international break.
Filip Jørgensen has given an interview to Tipsbladet to discuss his temporary exit from Chelsea.
The limited role didn’t please the 24-year-old, who had already decided to leave the Blues in January. He was hoping to see whether the situation would change upon Xabi Alonso’s arrival in the summer.
That didn’t happen and Tipsbladet states he ‘put pressure on Chelsea’ to secure a loan move to Strasbourg. BlueCo own both clubs, making the negotiations relatively easier for his transfer. The Dane shares his excitement over his decision to join the Ligue 1 side.
“Ever since January, I knew I wanted to move. I wanted to play every weekend and show what I can do. It means an absolute lot. I am very happy about it,” he said.
“They asked me two months before the end of the season what I wanted for next season, whether I wanted to stay or whether I wanted to leave. And I just want to play. If I could play regularly at Chelsea, I would like to stay, but if not, I would like to leave.”
Didn’t try to impress Chelsea coaches
In January, the Blues parted ways with Enzo Maresca and appointed Liam Rosenior as his successor. The latter left in April, and Calum McFarlane then took charge as the interim.
Filip Jørgensen says he didn’t want to convince the two managers because he had decided to leave.
“No, there was no chance. We already knew I was leaving, so we didn’t even try to do anything about it,” Jørgensen explained.
RC Strasbourg have no option or obligation to make his loan stay permanent. Therefore, after this season, the stopper has to return to his parent club, where he has a contract until 2031. For now, the player is unsure of his future at Chelsea.
“I’m not thinking about that right now. I just want to have a good year, and then next summer we’ll see what happens,” he added.
Xabi Alonso’s side signed Emiliano Martínez in August and he’s their new No.1. Unless he leaves next summer, Jørgensen may find it difficult to become first choice at Chelsea.
