Virgil Van Dijk’s Liverpool contract runs out in 2027 and the Dutchman’s possible free agent status is attracting attention abroad.
Despite being 35, the centre-back’s influence at Anfield hasn’t reduced. He has fought through injuries during and has continued being consistent for the Reds.
There have previously been suggestions of AC Milan being interested in the veteran. A move was never executed, but Van Dijk’s contract status remains the same.
Now, another Italian club are keeping a close eye on his situation.
Juventus watched Van Dijk closely
Thursday’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport states the club in question is Juventus, who want to sign a centre-back in the summer.
This would become a priority if Bremer leaves, with several English clubs in the race for him. Liverpool themselves have been mentioned as a suitor in the past.
As a result, Juventus are keeping a close eye on Van Dijk and sent a scout to watch the Netherlands’ recent Nations League tie against Germany. They wanted to assess how the centre-back is doing in a national team context and were happy with what they saw.
The scout is close to Bianconeri manager Luciano Spalletti, with Van Dijk now on the club’s shortlist.
A move is being evaluated, as extensive notes were made during the Germany tie.
Everything comes down to the Reds
Centre-back is one spot where Liverpool have been lacking from a depth standpoint over the last few months. Van Dijk has been the only constant in that position and if he leaves, Andoni Iraola could have problems in that department.
But if Liverpool do sign a capable replacement, the reliance on the ex-Southampton man will reduce. Letting him leave for free will be a huge decision, especially as they could see Alisson depart in the same window. Both carry significant influence at the club and that is difficult to replace instantly.
Whether they want to lose two dressing room leaders in a short space of time remains to be seen.
