Fiorentina have dropped a ‘surprise’ transfer move by opening talks with Leeds United over Wilfried Gnonto.
Journalist Gianluca di Marzio reports that Fiorentina are pursuing the 22-year-old. Negotiations with Leeds are now underway regarding a potential transfer.
He states that the Leeds man has become a ‘surprise target’ for the Italian side. They’re looking to fill the role of a wide forward. They are exploring various options in that pursuit and Gnonto is now one of them.
Leeds with decision to make
Whether Leeds will entertain any bids from Fiorentina in the dying days of the summer transfer window, remains to be seen.
Wilfried Gnonto is not currently a key player under Daniel Farke and is yet to feature for Leeds in any form this season.
He also spent most of last season out of the picture, making 29 appearances in total but only managed 867 minutes in them.
He started just four Premier League games all season but made 19 appearances from the bench. He didn’t manage more than 45 minutes of action from the end of November onwards.
€16m valuation
With Leeds adding Harry Wilson to their wide option this summer, competition at Elland Road has also now increased. Perhaps that is something Fiorentina are looking to take advantage of.
Di Marzio makes no mention of a possible asking price, or what Fiorentina are willing to spend at this point. Wilfried Gnonto is currently valued at €16m by Transfermarkt.
That means Leeds could still make a healthy profit on the Leeds could still make a healthy profit on the €4m that they spent to sign him four years ago.
With his deal expiring in 2028, this summer is the ideal one for Leeds to sell in too. It would certainly allow them to command a better fee than next summer, when he would be in the final year of his deal.
