Inter Milan have decided not to pursue a deal for Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence, with his £40m asking price considered too high.
Journalist Orazio Accomando reports that Inter have turned their back on a deal for the England defender because of Tottenham’s asking price.
Tottenham want £40m
According to his information, Tottenham are looking for £40m for the 25-year-old this summer. That equates to around €47m, a figure deemed excessive by the Nerazzurri. The Italian champions are continuing to evaluate other options instead.
The Italian side need to buy a new starting right-back this summer after Denzel Dumfries moved to Real Madrid.
Djed Spence has long been named among Inter’s top targets. Indeed, Sport Witness covered a report this week explaining that Inter were ready to move forwards in talks with Tottenham.
They were seeking a discount on Tottenham’s £40m demands. But it appears those talks have e not gone quite as well as they would have liked. Instead, the Italian side have now abandoned any efforts to sign Spence for the time being.
Inter walk away ‘at this time’
Of course, that latter point could be crucial. Accomando reports that that Inter have decided not to pursue Spence ‘at this time’. There is time for that to change later in the summer if other options are not available. There is also time for Tottenham to lower their demands and make a transfer possible.
Spurs need to raise funds at some point this summer following their early spending. They have already spent €267m on new arrivals but only brought in €69.8m in sales. They need further incomings to help balance the books and Spence is one of their most viable options following his performances at the World Cup.
£40m is a big asking price, though, and it has already scared off Inter Milan for the time being.
