While Denmark did qualify for next year’s Euros, they did so in a rather difficult fashion, with their latest result far from ideal.
Led by Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, they lost 2-0 to Northern Ireland on Monday night, in a performance that was very disappointing for all involved.
The Spurs man was immediately sought after by the Danish press, and gave his rather honest thoughts about the whole qualifying campaign, relayed by Bold.dk.
He said: “The qualification hasn’t been pretty, but I have to praise our character and say that the matches where it has been a bit on edge, or where it hasn’t been so good, we have still managed – with our character – to get the results home.”
This character was questioned after Denmark only scraped a win past San Marino during the last international break, and the Tottenham player was asked if it had been present during the loss to Northern Ireland.
He replied: “Oh, that’s a dangerous question, but I can say no when you lose a football match like that and with the way it happens. It was a bit too easy for them.”
The Tottenham midfielder isn’t having the best of seasons to date with his club on a personal level, as he has found minutes harder to come by under Ange Postecoglou than with previous managers.
The 28-year-old has only started two games in the Premier League, with most of his 11 appearances coming from the bench, which is why he has been linked with a move away in the January transfer window, with clubs such as Juventus and Atlético Madrid reported as interested in his services.
