Roma defender Federico Fazio has lamented the lack of VAR in 2018, believing it would have seen his side beat Liverpool in their infamous Champions League semi-final clash that year.

Liverpool and Roma met in the semi-finals of the competition two years ago, with the Reds securing an impressive 5-2 victory at Anfield in the first-leg.

That set up an enthralling second leg in Rome in which the Italian side battled to a 4-2 victory, eventually losing the tie 7-6 on aggregate and seeing Liverpool progress to the final in Kyiv.

The game was not without its controversy, with Roma believing they should have been awarded three penalties in the game but only receiving one.

Most controversial was the decision not to award a penalty against Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who appeared to have handled in the box just minutes after Roma had scored their second goal.

And Fazio believes had VAR been in play back then, it wouldn’t have been Liverpool who progressed to take on Real Madrid in the final.

“The game against Liverpool, the first leg,” he told a fan, relayed by Quotidiano, when asked to name his most difficult game since joining Roma.

“Because we had a great Champions League and it could have gone differently.

“In the return we had a great game, we could have done more. If there had been the VAR it would have been another game.“
