Player ‘never said no’ to summer Fulham move – Wanted transfer, has since retired from football

Towards the end of the transfer window, we covered an article from Italy claiming that Fulham had tried to sign Davide Santon.

At the time, the line was that the defender refused the Craven Cottage side, as well as all the other clubs who had come forward for him.

However, that appears to have been far from the truth, as the defender has since retired from football, giving a few interviews to various outlets since.

Fulham certainly made him an offer, which Santon admitted to when speaking to Il Messaggero on Monday, but he didn’t sign due to his physical condition.

He said: “I have never lacked proposals. Fulham, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, a couple of clubs in Spain, Turkey and I never said no. The problem is that the medical examinations followed. One day I said to Pinto: ‘Director, it’s not that I don’t want to go, but if I go they send me back’.”

It appears the player failed a bunch of medicals, including one with the Fulham, eventually deciding that continuing was not worth it.

That’s why he called it a day, just like Andrea Ranocchia recently did following an injury a month or so after signing for Monza on a free transfer.

As for Fulham, they ended up bolstering their full-back positions with Kevin Mbabu from Wolfsburg and Layvin Kurzawa from Paris Saint-Germain.
