Brazilian side Flamengo have handed youngster João Gomes a new contract until 2027 in an effort to ward off interest from Liverpool.

The Reds were linked with a move for the 21-year-old midfielder earlier this week, with reports stating they were planning a January bid for him.

That came via journalist Julio Miguel Neto, who stated that Jurgen Klopp and his team had been keeping an eye on the player for some time and were planning on making a move once the January transfer window rolled around.

They were not the only European side interested in him, with Atletico Madrid and Manchester United also named as interested parties alongside Liverpool.

However, it appears their chances of getting him may have just been dealt a blow as Flamengo have moved quickly to sign him up to a new deal.

Colunado Flo report that the Brazilian club have ‘solved the complicated contractual situation’ around the midfielder, signing him to a new deal until 2025.

That has seen the player, who was one of the lowest earners at the club on R$50 thousand, increase his wage packet to R$250,000 per month for the next four and a half years.

That information comes via Youtuber Flazeiro but has been confirmed Colunado Flo and their journalist Vitor Beloti.

The website states it is ‘worth remembering’ that Gomes had ‘received inquiries’ from big European clubs such as Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

However, he always gave his preference to Flamengo and wanted the contract renewal, which he has now secured and is likely to put an end to rumours about Liverpool for the time being.
