Liverpool and Tottenham will have to wait until the summer if they wish to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Ko Itakura on the cheap, with his release clause not activating until the summer.

That’s according to journalist Patrick Berger, who has clarified that the player will not be available this month.

A report yesterday made it clear that Liverpool and Tottenham were showing an interest in the defender and that ‘a move to the island is possible’.

That report explained both sides had ‘put out feelers’ for Itakura, who joined the German side from Manchester City for €5m back in 2022.

It was explained that the centre-back can be signed next summer for €15m due to a release clause in his contract. It was unclear whether that was available this month as well.

Berger now clarifies that, explaining that his exit clause ‘takes effect’ in the summer and is valued at €10-15m.

Liverpool and Tottenham had showed interest in him recently, but Gladbach are working on extending the defender’s contract early to avoid losing him to either side.

It seems he’s a name to keep an eye on for the summer, then, rather than this month, with the clause that’s key to the interest in him not activating this month.
