Chivas winger Roberto Alvarado has revealed how his dream of playing for Manchester City was brought crashing down, despite training with some of the club’s top talents earlier in his career.

The 25-year-old has been speaking to the Chivas Podcast, relayed by Record, about his time at Manchester City and how it was brought to swift end.

Officially he has spent all of his career in Mexico, starting out with Celaya before moving to Pachuca, Necaxa, CD Cruz Azul and then Chivas in January 2022.

He’s been a regular for the club since, making 143 appearances and managing 19 goals and 25 assists in that time.

Alvarado is very much established at the club and now a regular for the Mexican national team too, with Record describing him as one of the best players at his club.

His career path could have taken a much different route, though. The newspaper explains that early on in his career, a young Alvarado ‘decided to try his luck’ in Europe and found himself playing for Manchester City’s youth teams.

That saw him training with future stars such as Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Brahim Diaz, who’ve since enjoyed success at Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.

It wasn’t to be for him, however, as his inability to provide the documents required meant Manchester City had to send him back to Mexico.

“I had to go back,” he said.

“I got to train with Brahim, Foden, Sancho. It was either me or Foden and they asked for our papers. In order not to make it so long, he stayed because of a proof of address.

“I didn’t bring it, so they went for him. Besides, I didn’t have a copy of my managers’ INEs with me, so it didn’t matter. My dream was over.”
