When Matheus França left Brazil to join Crystal Palace this summer, we saw many mentions of João Gomes’ transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which happened in January.

That’s because both left Flamengo to make their way to English football, and with them both playing in midfield, one may have taken some advice from the other about the move.

That situation has now been mentioned by João Gomes himself, as he gave ESPN Brasil an exclusive interview this week.

The player said he’s happy that Matheus França joined Crystal Palace, sending a lot of praise to his former teammate.

“He’s got quality. I was a professional when he came up. He was always a very good guy. A good chatter, a guy who respected. He has everything to do well here. He has similar characteristics to me. A more physical game, very fast, strong. I’m sure he’ll do well here.”

Asked if he’s given França any advice, Gomes denied that, saying he’s not the kind of person who’d take that kind of step.

“No, I’ve only been here a short time. I’m not much of an advice giver. I always try to drag people along by the force of success. The guy who talks, talks and doesn’t do… I’m not that guy. The less I say, the better. They’ll see it in my behaviour.”

Crystal Palace spent €20m to sign França from Flamengo this summer. The midfielder is still to make his debut for the club, though, as a lower back injury has been leaving him sidelined.

So even though Wolves and Crystal Palace will be facing each other on Sunday, the two are unlikely to meet each other on the pitch.
