With Chelsea’s new boss Graham Potter sending Kalidou Koulibaly to the bench in the Champions League clash against RB Salzburg, that was enough for the Italian media to make a big thing out of it.

Outlet Area Napoli now gives the point of view from the defender’s former club, claiming that not many people would have imagined that the 31-year-old would become a reserve player so soon after moving to the Stamford Bridge.

This subject was also brought to Gazzetta Dello Sport journalist Mimmo Malfitano being asked about the chances of the player potentially returning to the Serie A side from Chelsea à la Romelu Lukaku, but the pundit didn’t really believe that could be a possibility.

“The Senegalese in Italy after a year at Chelsea? I think it’s a very different case than that of Romelu LukakuDe Laurentiis would never take back one of the players who left in the summer,” said Malfitano (via Area Napoli).

Koulibaly does have six appearances for Chelsea this season, starting all games under Thomas Tuchel and only missing one match due to suspension, but some of those were shaky, especially against Leeds and Southampton.

Graham Potter has only been in charge of the Blues for the Salzburg clash to date, and despite the strong decision to put the defender on the bench, perhaps the Italian media need to give him a bit more time to adapt and convince his new manager to give him a chance.
