With the European Super League on the verge of complete collapse, Barcelona won’t be getting the huge cash injection they were clearly looking for.

Debt at the club is at a level which is far from manageable and there doesn’t look an obvious way out for Joan Laporta and the Blaugrana.

Optimism over huge summer signings, with Erling Haaland repeatedly linked by the Catalan media in recent weeks, will surely now be dampened and without a series of sales, Barcelona will have to look at bargain signings, or those available on free transfers.

That’s where Memphis Depay comes in and it’s no surprise to see Mundo Deportivo bring his signing back into the picture on Wednesday.

According to the Catalan newspaper, the Lyon player, who is available on a free transfer in the summer, is ‘getting closer’ to signing for Barcelona.

The club have already initiated negotiations to bring him in when his Lyon contract expires, and he’s an express wish of manager Ronald Koeman.

This one may now be pushed up the list for completion, given the likely ESL collapse.
