With rumours suggesting they could move for Edinson Cavani or Ciro Immobile if their takeover goes through, it’s clear Newcastle United are looking for a new striker this summer.
Joelinton hasn’t quite lived up to his expensive price tag so far, and while he may be given extra time to prove himself at St James’ Park, some extra firepower is needed.
However, with the so-called unlimited funds yet to arrive in the club’s coffers, it appears Newcastle are also looking at more realistic offers i.e. players who would join them for a relatively modest fee and wouldn’t need huge paycheques to be convinced of the move.
Among those appears to be AS Roma’s Patrik Schick, who has just spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at RB Leipzig.
The German side had an option to buy the Czech Republic international for €29m, but it seems they will not do so, and Il Sussi Diario in Italy claim ‘no talks are planned’ to try and find an agreement in the near future.
That leaves other clubs the chance to come forward with their interest, which Newcastle have allegedly done.
The website, in an exclusive, state the player’s entourage have ‘received requests in the past few days’ from four clubs: the Magpies, Bayer Leverkusen, Fiorentina and Milan.
It’s the latter of the quartet who are said to be in the lead thanks to Ralf Rangnick, set to take over from Stefano Pioli once the season ends.
While there isn’t any more detail about Newcastle in the article beyond their single mention, there is useful information to be taken from it, such as the fact Roma ‘won’t be making big discounts’ and will ask for €28-29m.
That could be lowered to €25m through negotiations, which remains an affordable fee for Steve Bruce’s side even without the backing of their potential new owners.
It seems Milan have a head start here, and Newcastle may have to move swiftly and convincingly if they don’t want to miss out on Schick.
