One of, if not *the* story of the January transfer window was that of Idrissa Gueye and his failed move to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Senegal international was a target for the Ligue 1 champions, who were desperately on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder, but Everton’s reluctance to sign their key player saw the transfer fail to materialise.
Now stuck at Goodison Park until the end of the season (at least), Gueye will be looking to help his side improve their recent form, with Tuesday evening’s result against Cardiff a good start.
The Everton player made it clear he wanted to leave, and he wasn’t the only one who would have liked to see the transfer go through, as his national team manager, Aliou Cissé, was fully behind his star man playing at a higher level.
He said, in a press conference relayed by Wiwsport: “We would have all liked to see him at Paris Saint-Germain. It’s a club I know, having played there for three seasons. For Gana, that could have been exceptional, but it’s not over. He needs to continue to have the same level for Everton and with us, and I’m convinced his time to go to a big club will come.
“That’s what we wish him because playing the Champions League can be interesting and in a league where he can play for a club at the top of the table. That would be great for him”.
Renewing his contract this time last year, Gueye has just over three seasons left on his Everton deal, meaning the Toffees hold a lot of power over how much they can ask for.
For the Toffees, it was simply a case of being unable to replace him in January, so if the opportunity comes again, perhaps they’ll be more lenient in the summer, with more alternatives available.
