The Danish football crisis is over. For now.
The country’s normal squad was back on Sunday to beat Wales 2-0 after an alternative selection had lost to Slovakia. A commercial dispute between the DBU, Denmark’s national football association, and the country’s main players had led to the situation.
With stubbornness and good and bad points on all sides, the DBU set about finding a squad of players who could take part in the match and therefore help the country avoid sanctions for not playing.
In the end they got lower league players and even some of the national futsal team. The team didn’t embarrass themselves as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to Slovakia, and got some praise for that.
One of the players, Daniel Holm, tweeted after the match ‘I was 23 years old when I got a debut for the A-national team.’
That led Huddersfield Town’s Mathias Jørgensen to reply ‘Congratulations’. Many people took this as a sarcastic swipe against the young footballer, and ‘Zanka’ has now elaborated on what he meant… largely confirming it was.
“I can only say that when you get an international match after 1000 players have said no and since writing the way he did when many before him have tried to come to the national team, you may just have to relax before you brag on Twitter.
“Those who set up for the team last week should think back to 2014, where I was negotiating and negotiating. I was willing to help FCK and not play European football because we fought for requirements for players in the 1st and 2nd division.
“Those who are not members of the Player Association can do whatever they want. But for the rest, it is worth thinking about that situation.”
Some fans have suggested Jørgensen should have been thankful, rather than sarcastic, given there’ll now be no sanctions on the Danish team.
