Tottenham have been close to landing Italian sporting director Piero Ausilio but they could soon face competition from Liverpool.
The 54-year-old departed Inter Milan in dramatic circumstances two weeks ago. There were disagreements over a renewal and wages, leading to Ausilio immediately asking for his departure.
This makes him an attractive opportunity for many clubs. Sport Witness have covered how Tottenham have been in discussions over a deal. Roberto De Zerbi is keen on uniting with his compatriot in London and an agent is working to complete the move.
Spurs can now face Liverpool in the race for Ausilio.
Spurs deal not done yet
Gianluca Di Marzio spoke to Sky studios on Monday evening, before Inter’s 5-3 win over Udinese in Serie A.
He was asked about the Nerazzurri’s management reshaping and provided details about Ausilio’s future.
The journalist revealed a deal with Tottenham isn’t done yet – via FCInter1908: “Ausilio? He could go to the Premier League. I don’t think he’s that far along with Tottenham. There were talks over the summer.”
Di Marzio went on to assess the idea of Liverpool coming into the race too.
“I wouldn’t rule out Liverpool, who lost their sporting director, who left for Saudi Arabia to be replaced by Simone Inzaghi. A Premier League experience could be a possibility.”
The Italian also backed Dario Baccin to succeed as a replacement for Ausilio at Inter.
“Baccin has followed the birth and growth of the U23 team in recent years, and has always had the approach of focusing on young players.”
“I remember that many years ago he was one of the first to spot Retegui in Argentina, who then never joined Inter. He always liked going to South America, with Ausilio’s input. I think we will continue this path, which has been successful.”
Our take: Both clubs need direction
Liverpool have lost Richard Hughes and their recruitment in the last two summers has left some questions. They have lost stability and Ausilio is someone who can bring them back on track.
At Inter, he made them the most stable club in Italy that recruited as per their on-pitch identity. The Reds would do that under Jurgen Klopp.
As for Tottenham, they might need the Italian more to get back into Europe. They simply can’t rely on a manager’s transfer demands to make progress. The often-reckless spending this summer shows that.
There’s every chance Liverpool are being thrown in to pressure Tottenham into finalising their move.
