Just over a week ago we covered a report from Ecuador which said the alarms were going off at the national team headquarters as they panicked over a fresh injury to a Brighton & Hove Albion player.
There was fear that Pervis Estupiñán could either miss the Copa America this summer or arrive not in full fitness after picking up an ankle injury with his Premier League club.
Now it seems like the former, the worst case scenario for Ecuador, is the stark reality. Manager Félix Sánchez Bas told the press on Thursday: “We will see how the boys go, that they respect our injuries. We have an important player like Pervis who will not be able to accompany us.”
Ecuador newspaper Diario Expreso say that the Brighton player is absolutely out of the summer tournament, which is taking place in the US from June 20th until July 14th, and won’t be fit again for several months after undergoing ankle surgery.
It’s a big personal blow and one for Ecuador too, but Brighton will be hoping a summer of rest can see Estupiñán return fresh and fit for the next Premier League season.
