Erik ten Hag will be kicking himself watching Manchester United reach the Europa League final, as it’s his team which has done it.

That’s according to journalist Robert Maskaant on Sport Nieuws’ podcast, as they discuss the Europa League final this week.

Manchester United will be taking on Tottenham in Bilbao in the final of the tournament after comfortable seeing off Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals over the last week.

They beat the Spanish side 3-0 in the first leg and followed that up with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford on Thursday in another comprehensive victory.

Ruben Amorim’s side will now be focused on beating Tottenham in the final and securing a place in next season’s Champions League as the Europa League winners.

That would put a positive end on what has been a miserable season in which they currently sit 15th in the Premier League table.

Their league form has been nothing short of disastrous and cost Erik ten Hag his job after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham in October left them 14th and in 21st in the Europa League table, comprised of 36 teams.

Things have not improved hugely under Ruben Amorim, but the Portuguese has guided them well in Europe, with several impressive results on the way to the final. Maskaant, though, believes Ten Hag will be watching on with some regret.

“It’s his team what’s there,” he said.

“And the final can win, I think. With all due respect for Spurs, they are even less this year. He has to think, I could have done this too.”
