West Ham were on the verge of signing Gustavo Sá at the beginning of July. Yet more than ten days later the expected medical and contract signing have still not taken place.

The Hammers were expected to pay around €20m (£17.3m). Meanwhile, the Famalicão captain was preparing to travel to England to complete the move. Instead, as we previously covered, Gustavo Sá remained at Famalicão. But why?

There has been no announcement from either club. Perhaps more tellingly, the Portuguese newspapers which initially presented the transfer as virtually complete have gradually adopted much more cautious language.

There is still no indication the move has collapsed. However, the sequence of reports over the past week suggests the process has become more complicated than first expected.

July 10: First acknowledgement of an impasse

The first clear sign that the transfer was not progressing as quickly as anticipated arrived on July 10.

O Jogo reported that Gustavo Sá had received Famalicão’s Municipal Sporting Merit Medal.

The newspaper’s headline referred directly to an “impasse” and stated that the deal was still waiting for “white smoke”. That represented a noticeable change from the expectation that the midfielder would soon be travelling to London.

O Jogo continued to report that the transfer was “practically lined up”. West Ham were still said to be willing to invest €20m (£17.3m). Gustavo Sá reportedly had a five-year contract waiting for him as well.

The important detail, though, was what had not happened. There was no journey to England, no medical and no confirmation that the clubs had completed the transfer.

Gustavo Sá himself gave no indication that anything had changed. He simply spoke about his pride at receiving the award and his determination to keep improving and help Famalicão achieve their objectives.

July 14: The language changes

The tone became even more cautious four days later. Famalicão unveiled Carlos Carvalhal as their new manager following Hugo Oliveira’s departure to Strasbourg. This gave club president Miguel Ribeiro an opportunity to address Gustavo Sá’s future.

According to A Bola, Ribeiro said only: “He has approaches, but Famalicão are prepared for whatever may happen.”

That answer stood out because it avoided any suggestion that a transfer had already been agreed. There was no mention of West Ham. There was also no reference to a medical and no indication that the midfielder’s departure was imminent.

Record took a similar approach. Rather than describing the transfer as close, the newspaper simply reported that Gustavo Sá remained one of the players most likely to leave during the summer. West Ham were “in the equation”.

It also pointed out that, despite the speculation, the Portugal Under-21 international remained part of the squad. Ribeiro himself suggested the club were relaxed about the possibility of another departure.

“If we are prepared to lose a manager, imagine a player,” he said. His comments showed Famalicão expected further movement in the market. However, they stopped well short of confirming Gustavo Sá’s transfer to West Ham.

July 16: Fresh twist raises more questions

On Thursday, both Record and O Jogo reported that Gustavo Sá was left out of Famalicão’s latest pre-season friendly against Lourosa.

This happened despite him remaining with the squad following Carlos Carvalhal’s arrival. Both newspapers confirmed the midfielder was at the training ground without taking part.

From there, the reports offered slightly different interpretations.

Record stressed there was no certainty over the reason for his absence. The newspaper said it was unclear whether Gustavo Sá had been left out because of a physical issue.

It was also possible Famalicão were protecting him while transfer discussions continued. In fact, it merely noted that the midfielder had now missed a second consecutive pre-season friendly.

O Jogo went a step further. The newspaper argued that Gustavo Sá’s omission reinforced the belief he was heading for the exit. But it also acknowledged that the West Ham story had become “enigmatic”.

Having been presented only days earlier as practically certain to join the Championship club, Gustavo Sá remained fully integrated with the squad. He continued to be surrounded by speculation linking him with other clubs, including Sporting.

Plenty of signs – but no breakthrough

Taken together, the reports paint a very different picture from the one emerging at the beginning of July.

The expectation of an imminent medical has disappeared from the Portuguese media. References to a completed agreement have gradually been replaced by more cautious language about approaches, possibilities and a player who remains expected to leave. No one is willing to say exactly when he might go.

At the same time, there is still nothing to suggest the transfer has collapsed.

Famalicão’s president has openly acknowledged interest. Carlos Carvalhal admitted he would be surprised if Gustavo Sá remained at the club because “only if the clubs are asleep” would players of that quality stay. Both Record and O Jogo continue to present West Ham as the leading destination.

The latest omission from the friendly could indicate the midfielder is being protected while the transfer is finalised. Equally, as Record points out, there has been no official explanation for his absence.
