Leeds United‘s Isaac Schmidt is likely to leave the Premier League side this summer and won’t be short of options.

The Switzerland international joined Leeds United from St. Gallen in August 2024 and didn’t enjoy regular minutes in the Championship. Despite their return to the top flight, he wanted to leave last summer.

Leeds United let him join Werder Bremen on loan with an option to buy in August 2025. The move didn’t work out well as he played just 676 minutes from 19 matches and injuries partly restricted his appearances.

In April, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany that the €3m buying option could be a bargain. That wasn’t enough to tempt the Bundesliga side to make his loan stay permanent.

Swiss interest in Leeds United player 

4-4-2.ch report the 26-year-old has an opportunity to return to Switzerland this summer.

FC Basel and Young Boys, the ‘two heavyweights’ of the Swiss league, are keen on signing Isaac Schmidt.

After his loan spell, the fullback has to return to Elland Road, where he’s unlikely to have a future under Daniel Farke. This should please the two Swiss clubs, who are considering signing him.

Dominik Schmid’s transfer to Red Bull Salzburg has seen FC Basel look for his successor. Young Boys are also in the market for a new left-back mainly because Jaouen Hadjam is attracting interest from elsewhere.

Both see the Whites defender as a perfect fit and have to battle for his signature. This is probably because of his experience of playing in his country, with Lausanne-Sport and St. Gallen.

Schmidt is looking for a club where he can enjoy regular minutes, and that’s achievable at FC Basel and Young Boys.

Player open to Leeds United exit 

Isaac Schmidt ‘can, in principle, imagine a return to Switzerland’ this summer, as long as the financial terms suit him. He earns €600,000 per year excluding bonuses.

4-4-2.ch makes no mention of whether FC Basel and Young Boys are looking to sign him on loan or a permanent transfer.

Schmidt has two years left on his contract and his value, as per Transfermarkt, is €2.2m.
