A few days before Christmas, HSV Hamburg initiated contact to sign Damion Downs from Southampton. That came less than a week after the German slant was that the 21-year-old wanted to prove himself in England.

Downs arrived in July from FC Koln and failed to have the desired impact.

The forward has played 14 matches so far this season and failed to find the back of the net once. In his defence, most of those appearances have been brief and he’s accumulated around 400 minutes.

Bild is Germany’s biggest selling newspaper and in their Monday edition a Southampton exit is talked up again. Werder Bremen are desperate to improve their attacking options in the winter market, and the Southampton player is on the agenda.

Contact has been initiated over a loan move for Downs. As it stands, he’s the top candidate for the Bundesliga club. Subsequently, ‘talks are underway’.

HSV haven’t dropped their interest either, and the two clubs being keen may well help Southampton get a better deal. What the Saints think about a potential loan exit isn’t known.

In contradiction to those claims in mid December, Downs himself is now keen on a return to German football
