Southampton have already tried to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Luca Reggiani and will have a shot at getting him in January.

Late in the summer transfer window, Sport Witness tracked the young defender’s situation closely. Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that several clubs were interested in him and the Saints also made an approach for him.

The terms of Southampton’s offer were unknown but their interest was serious, as Italian clubs were also in the hunt.

There was also a growing feeling that he could leave Dortmund owing to a lack of first-team game time. Now, there is confirmation around the player’s demands.

Player seeking departure

BILD’s Monday print edition covers Reggiani’s future, and that his game time has been rather limited. He has made just one appearance in the Bundesliga in the ongoing season. That is expected to continue as Dortmund’s backline currently has several figures above him in the pecking order.

As a result, the 18-year-old is seriously considering a January exit from the German giants.

The newspaper further confirm Southampton made an offer late in the summer. Inter Milan and AC Milan also had the talent on their shortlist but they never made a formal move like the Saints did.

It remains to be seen if Dortmund will execute a permanent sale or loan, having signed the talent in 2024.

Our take: Competition could grow

Before joining Dortmund, Reggiani spent some years at Sassuolo. That is why several Italian clubs could be keen on him, especially if there is a chance to execute an affordable deal.

Southampton’s task of signing him will therefore be far from easy. However, a move to St.Mary’s could help the teenager. The Saints have a proven track record of developing talents and he wouldn’t have as much pressure in the Championship.
