Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ Fer López will miss Spain U21s European qualifier against Romania on Tuesday because of a fitness problem and has left the camp to return to the Championship side.
The attacking midfielder joined Wolves from Celta Vigo for around €25m in June 2025. He managed one assist in 364 minutes from 12 matches for Wolves in his debut season.
Both the 22-year-old and Wolves, who were then in the Premier League, struggled, and he returned to Celta on loan in January. He enjoyed regular game time, managing two goals and an assist from 23 matches for the La Liga side.
Limited role at Wolves impacted López
Last September, Fer López made his Spain U21 debut. He didn’t feature in October and November because of his struggles at Molineux and the loan move helped him regain his place in March.
The La Liga side wanted to extend his stay in the summer window. Wolves refused and he’s been a key figure under César Peixoto this season.
López has scored five goals and contributed two assists from nine matches. This helped him retain his place in David Gordo’s squad for this international break.
He featured in the 2-1 defeat to Finland U21, and Gordo left the Wolves man out of the squad in their 13-0 win over San Marino U21. La Rojita will face Romania U21 on Tuesday, and the attacker will miss this clash.

RFEF confirms Wolves player’s withdrawal
The Spanish football association [RFEF] have confirmed, relayed by Mundo Deportivo, that Fer López left the national team camp on Sunday due to “physical discomfort”.
David Gordo didn’t bring in a replacement for the Wolves man and will have a 22-member squad for tomorrow’s clash.
The Championship side’s medical staff will evaluate him upon his return to England. This should provide César Peixoto clarity and an idea when the player can feature again.
Fer López’s setback is a concern for the English club ahead of their busy schedule. Wolves have six matches this month, starting with the league clash against Middlesbrough later this weekend.
