Luca Reggiani is yet to break into the Borussia Dortmund first-team and Southampton are now attempting to sign him.
The German giants signed the Italian when he was only 16. Since then, he has played for their youth teams, doing well with the U17s and U19s sides.
While Reggiani has nine appearances for the senior side, he hasn’t become a regular for them yet. He is also yet to make a league appearance this season, being left on the bench against Hamburg.
This has given Southampton a chance to sign the teenager.
Saints have made an offer
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the 18-year-old defender’s future could lie in England. Reggiani finds himself in the middle of a transfer battle, with also involves Italian clubs.
Several teams in Serie A are closely monitoring the Dortmund talent but Southampton’s approach comes as a threat.
The journalist’s report doesn’t mention the Saints but he clarifies in a tweet that it is indeed them who want Reggiani.
Southampton have made a formal offer for the talent and it has landed on Dortmund’s table. Their attempt is now underway, with Serie A sides yet to respond with an offer of their own.
Our take: Transfer likely desired
A move to Southampton could end up helping Reggiani. While he won’t play in the Premier League, he may not be ready for it yet. The South Coast club will allow him that opportunity and that would only help his long-term growth.
The terms of the offer aren’t known but the player shouldn’t be expensive. While his contract runs out in 2029, Dortmund clearly don’t see him as a regular option.
At the same time, everything can come down to the player himself. If he wants to return to Italy, Southampton may not have a chance. But if Reggiani wants a completely new adventure, the Saints have freed up space from Yukinari Sugawara’s impending exit and this will help them with a deal.
