Sunderland have been in the picture to sign AS Roma’s Matias Soule and are back in the fray for the deal.
The attacker has faced ups and downs during his time in the Italian capital. He joined them from Juventus in 2024 but injuries held his progress back during the 2025/26 campaign.
This has led to Roma considering his exit. Sport Witness have covered how his agent has been working to find a new club, having offered Sunderland the chance to sign him.
While the Black Cats didn’t show too much interest back then, their interest hasn’t gone away.
Approaches made again
Il Messaggero – via VoceGiallorossa, report that Sunderland are now competing with AC Milan for the Argentine.
A swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku has been floated, but the possibility is low. The Frenchman is now edging close to a move to Leipzig, meaning Milan would have to sign Soule on a separate deal.
At the same time, Sunderland have made fresh, exploratory contact for Soule. Florent Ghisolfi likely holds the key, having previously played a role in bringing him to the Giallorossi back in 2024
Roma currently value the versatile attacker at between €35m and €40m. This financial impetus will be important for them, as it can unlock a move for Lyon’s Malick Fofana late in the window.
Our take: Desperation for sale
The player is aware he will not be key at Roma under Gian Piero Gasperini. That is why attempts have been made by his agent to find a new club where the 23-year-old can play regularly.
Roma want the transfer. Gasperini has been desperate for attacking incomings and the Giallorossi would not be against Soule’s sale.
This could be a significant transfer opportunity for Sunderland. The ex-Juventus youngster can play across the attack and has significant European experience.
