Southampton have identified Viking FK’s Henrik Falchener as a new target and are ready to challenge Championship rivals Wrexham for his signature.
That’s according to TV2 in Norway, who covers both Southampton and Wrexham’s interest in the 23-year-old.
Southampton and Wrexham to battle it out
Henrik Falchener’s development and performances for the Norwegian club haven’t gone unnoticed in the UK.
The British media first reported on the Welsh club’s interest in the centre-back and there was also a talk of an offer.
TV2 picks up on that and backs up Wrexham’s interest in the 23-year-old when covering the latest about the Saints.
Southampton have now joined Phil Parkinson’s side, and the Championship duo will have a late battle for his signature.
Southampton’s intention to make offer
Wrexham have made an offer of around NKK 100m [€9.1m] for the Norway international.
Tonda Eckert’s side signal their willingness to match Wrexham’s proposal. In short, there will be a bidding war between the two British clubs.
This was before Viking FK’s 3-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb yesterday. The result means the Norwegian club have secured a berth in the Champions League group stage. That can make a potential deal for Henrik Falchener more complicated for Southampton and the Welsh club.
West Ham United recently made a NKK 100 [€9.1m] bid to sign the defender’s teammate, Edvin Austbø. Earlier this month, Viking sporting director Erik Nevland confirmed rejecting offers each worth around NKK 100m for both Austbø and Henrik Falchener.
Taking this and the latest Champions League qualification into account, Viking are unlikely to let the centre-back leave for €9.1m. There’s no indication whether these two clubs intend to return with improved bids.
